Introduction: Building a Workbench with Lockable Drawers Welcome! In this guide, we'll walk you through building a sturdy and functional workbench featuring lockable drawers. This project requires intermediate woodworking skills and access to power tools. Let's get started!
Materials and Tools: Before you begin, gather the necessary materials and tools.
  • Lumber:
  • (2) 4x4 posts (for legs)
  • (2) 2x4s (for workbench frame sides)
  • (2) 2x4s (for workbench frame front/back)
  • (2) 2x4s (for drawer support rails)
  • Plywood (for workbench top, drawer boxes, and drawer fronts)
  • Hardwood edging (optional, for workbench top)
  • Hardware:
  • Wood screws (various sizes)
  • Wood glue
  • Drawer slides
  • Locking drawer slides (for lockable drawers)
  • Locks and keys (for lockable drawers)
  • Corner braces (optional, for added stability)
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Finishing supplies (stain, varnish, polyurethane, etc.)
  • Tools:
  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Miter saw (optional, for precise cuts)
  • Drill/driver
  • Screwdrivers
  • Measuring tape
  • Square
  • Clamps
  • Sander
  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
Step 1: Build the Workbench Frame Cut the 4x4 posts to the desired height of your workbench legs (typically 34-36 inches). Cut the 2x4s for the sides, front, and back of the workbench frame. Assemble the frame by attaching the 2x4s to the legs using wood screws and wood glue. Ensure the frame is square before the glue dries. Use clamps to hold the frame together while the glue sets.
Step 2: Add Drawer Support Rails Cut the 2x4s for the drawer support rails. These rails will support the weight of the drawers. Attach the rails to the inside of the workbench frame, ensuring they are level and evenly spaced. Use wood screws and wood glue for a strong bond.
Step 3: Construct the Workbench Top Cut the plywood to the desired size for the workbench top. If desired, add hardwood edging to the top for a more finished look. Attach the top to the workbench frame using wood screws. Ensure the top is flush with the frame.
Step 4: Build the Drawer Boxes Cut the plywood for the drawer boxes. Assemble the boxes using wood screws and wood glue. Ensure the boxes are square and the dimensions are compatible with your chosen drawer slides.
Step 5: Install Drawer Slides Install the drawer slides on the inside of the drawer support rails and on the drawer boxes. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation.
Step 6: Create Drawer Fronts and Install Locks Cut the plywood for the drawer fronts. Attach the drawer fronts to the drawer boxes using screws. Install the locks onto the drawer fronts, following the manufacturer's directions. Be sure that the locking mechanisms engage properly with the workbench frame or a strike plate installed on the frame.
Step 7: Sand and Finish Sand all surfaces of the workbench, including the frame, top, drawers, and drawer fronts. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper and gradually move to finer grits. Apply your desired finish (stain, varnish, polyurethane, etc.) to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the workbench.
Step 8: Final Assembly and Testing Install the drawers into the workbench, ensuring they slide smoothly. Test the locking mechanisms to confirm they are functioning correctly. Add corner braces (optional) to the legs for added stability.
Conclusion: Enjoy Your New Workbench! Congratulations! You have successfully built a workbench with lockable drawers. This workbench will provide a sturdy and secure workspace for your projects. Remember to maintain your workbench by cleaning it regularly and reapplying finish as needed.
